NON-OPIOID DRUG OVERDOSE (NODO)

WHAT IS NODO?

NODO refers to life-threatening overdose of a drug or combination of drugs not in the family of opioids - this means a mu-receptor antagonist like naloxone will not reverse this toxicity. In fact, most NODO lack a specific antidote, presenting a considerable unmet medical need. An effective treatment for NODO, especially those caused by cocaine and other cardio-active drugs holds significant potential for helping patients.

LipidRescue® is an investigational drug; the safety and efficacy of the drug have not been approved or authorized by FDA.  LipidRescue® is a proposed proprietary name that is subject to FDA approval.

How Might LipidRescue® Therapy Help?

LipidRescue® can potentially reverse toxicity caused by drugs that are fat soluble including many of the drugs involved in severe, or even fatal NODO. The mechanism is widely applicable and can apply to combinations of drugs and situations where the drug(s) is unknown.

More information about NODO

How does NODO occur?

  • NODO results from intentional or accidental ingestion of excessive amounts of pharmaceutical or illicit drugs, often in combination.

How often does NODO occur?

  • The 2011 Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN, see link below) found ~2.5M emergency room visits for drug abuse or overdose. In 2018, NODO caused over 20,000 fatalities.

What illicit drugs result in NODO?

  • In 2011, roughly 40% (~500,000) of NODO involved cocaine, 36% (455,000) involved marijuana and another 12% (~160,000) involved amphetamines. Each is lipid soluble and LipidRescue® could help treat related NODO.

What pharmaceuticals cause NODO?

  • Many drugs involved in severe, or even fatal NODO are lipid-soluble and therefore potentially addressable by LipidRescue®. These include among others antihypertensives (e.g., calcium channel or beta receptor blockers), antidepressants (tricyclics, atypicals) and antipsychotics.
